Electrolysis is one of many industrial processes which can help to improve manufacturing. It’s something which can be carried out on a large scale, and it can go a long way to improving costs and manufacturing times. It has a number of functions within manufacturing industries.
Electrolysis is a chemical reaction which is caused by passing a direct current through an ionic substance. It is used to separate out substances which are either molten or dissolved in another substance. In this state, ions will be free to move, and electrolysis will work successfully. The main components required for the process are two electrodes and a direct current. As the direct current is passed through the electrolyte (the substance which is being separated), positively charged ions go to the negative electrode, and negatively charged ions go to the positive electrode.
One of the ways electrolysis is used in industrial processes is called electrometallurgy, which extracts pure forms of metals. This is used for aluminium, calcium, copper, lithium, magnesium, potassium and sodium. Electrolysis is also used in the production of chlorine and hydrogen, and in the process of electroplating, which layers up metals for strength or for decorative purpose.
