Sustainability is an issue that is affecting us in all areas of our everyday lives, and no more so than in product design. This is a practice where something new is created, so if the resources used are not sustainably managed, this can make the whole project untenable. With everyone focusing on their carbon footprints, your clients will inevitably want to understand the implications of your designs for theirs.
There are many ways you can improve your product designs and make them more sustainable. Understand where all your components are sourced, and if you can, use recycled materials. Some projects now use 100% recycled materials, which is much better for the planet and the environment. Talk to other product designers around you to get some inspiration and see how they are using resources. It’s also important to think about whether the materials you use are recyclable, for when the product reaches the end of its lifecycle.
